Not a lot of people talk about it nowadays and it seems that a cover letter might not be of use anymore. But think about it for a moment. The cover letter is a summary of you talking about your skills, achievements, experience and why you are the best person for the job in full sentences. It's like you are offering them a form of interview before you even get an interview. It's your competitive advantage. If they get to read it of course.

Step 1: Create a Checklist

Your CV is just written in bullet points, presenting the responsibilities that you had during your previous employments. This can be very subjective to the person reading it, either for the good or the bad. So what your Cover Letter should say ? It should portray yourself and your skills from the perspective of your responsibilities. Some points to include would be the following .
 
  • Who you are as a person, your personality.
  • How you achieved success through your previous employments
  • What you have gained from your experience
  • What strengths and value you can provide to the company

Visualization

The person who is reading your Cover Letter should be able to visualize what kind of person you are, how you behave in certain situations, how you work and most importantly what value you can add to the team and the company. Think of your Cover Letter as a stepping stone to your CV. It is an extra source of information that will accompany your CV. 

Match it with the Job

The Cover Letter should be reviewed and edited to match each different Job that you are applying. You have to do the research in order to meet the requirements of the job and the company. The job description is the best place to start. Find the key points that they are looking for and start thinking which of these requirements you have gained from those experiences. From there on, carefully write them addressing the job and represent your skills so that they will be valuable to the employer. And remember to always review!
